Overview text of ear conditions
Some patients are not happy with the shape of their nose. ENT surgeons are uniquely placed to surgically improve the shape and function of the nose with rhinoplasty operations. Open and closed approaches can be used depending on the complexity of the patient's requirements.
The nose may be subject to inflammatory reactions related to allergens in our environment. Allergy tests (either blood tests or skin prick testing) may be required to differentiate between allergies caused by dusts and house dust mite, pollens, moulds, cats, dogs and feathers.
Nosebleeds are a common problem in children and the elderly in particular. Treatments vary depending on severity and specific cause and include the use of antibacterial creams, silver nitrate cautery as well as clipping arteries within the nose using endoscopic techniques under general anaesthetic.
Nasal blockage has many causes either as a result of structural deformities or inflammatory problems within the nose. Examples include a deviated nasal septum, large nasal turbinates or nasal polyps. The nasal septum can be straightened with a septoplasty operation and polyps treated with endoscopic sinus surgery. Inflammatory problems are often treated with steroid nasal sprays and antibiotics.
