Sore throats

Sore throats are a common problem especially around this time of year.

Patients attending their GP with this problem often ask for antibiotics but its important to remember that many sore throats are caused by viruses on which antibiotics have no effect.

True tonsillitis probably does benefit from antibiotics such as penicillin.

There is also some evidence published recently in the British Medical Journal which suggests that a short course of steroid tablets can be helpful in reducing the pain of a sore throat.

We use steroids in hospital for patients with severe tonsillitis with good effect. The use of steroids does need checking with your GP to help avoid complications.
