At this time of year, ear infections in children are very common. It's important to remember that antibiotics are not usually necessary for this sort of problem. Regular painkillers and good hydration are often the best cures. There is very little evidence to show any significant effect of giving antibiotics. However, if the infections are frequent then a long course (perhaps a couple of weeks) might be helpful but referral to an ENT surgeon might also be necessary especially if hearing seems to be a problem as well.
