tonsillectomy in children controversy

Recently the national news has reported that children have undergone "unnecessary tonsillectomy operations". Obviously this report will worry parents. It should be understood that nowadays there are strict guidelenes for recommending tonsillectomy in both adults and children. These are widely available and adhered to strictly in Worcestershire which i know from over 15 years experience as a consultamt in the region. Guidelines though are general and there will of course be exceptions.

Parents should be reassured that UK consultants are fully aware of indications for surgery and will adhere to them.
